William Munroe Special Collections –
“Naming the Unnamed” Online Gallery

The William Munroe Special Collections at the Concord Free Public Library will archive the Naming the Unnamed On-Line Gallery – shedding light on the researched biographies of each of the men sponsored by CPO (Concord Prison Outreach), and the art panels and digital images of the markers themselves. The development and housing of this content is located at the Concord Library website.

This important part of Concord’s town history developed into a complex body of work that has a vast potential to touch a community and online viewers in a multitude of ways.

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ART AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

As the project emerged, , CPO found a creative partner with Lisa Kennedy Associate Professor at Mass College of Art and Design, who made the “Naming the Unnamed” project a class assignment for her students  in the Spring of 2022.

Through extensive research of genealogical records, the students gathered and documented personal details for each person, then created individualized illustrations for all named people. These digital images will be displayed on the websites and in paperback book.

By naming these forgotten men, we recognize them as people, not numbers; we turn the markers into monuments and honor those who died while in custody. — “Naming the Unnamed”
