“Naming the Unnamed” Project – Illustrations For Each Man

In the spring of 2022, Lisa Daria Kennedy, Associate Professor at Massachusetts College of Art and Design collaborated with the Concord Prison Outreach leadership team on the “Naming the Unnamed” Project to bring an artistic expression to each of the people buried at the Concord Reformatory Cemetery.

The students in her Professional Illustration for the Community course gathered personal details for each person and created individualized illustrations for all 218 men. The illustrations were created using various mediums, from watercolor to ink to pencil to digital. The resulting artwork was made standard for press quality for book publishing and online viewing. The individual illustrations have been physically created on aluminum panels with eight-by-seven illustrations and have also been reprinted in a bound book, currently in its second printing.

You can also view these illustrations in person at the William Munroe Special Collections at the Concord Free Public Library special archive.

The art portion of the project was sponsored by the MassArt Foundation, Inc.
